Five questions from the pack.
Q1A block of density 700 kg/m³ floats in a liquid of specific gravity 0.85. What fraction of the block is submerged?
C. Submerged fraction equals ρ_block/ρ_liquid = 700/850 = 0.82. The 70% figure would be correct only in water. 85% uses the SG as the fraction, and 100% would mean the block is neutrally buoyant or sinking.
Q2A metal object weighs 12 N in air and 9.0 N when fully submerged in water. What is its specific gravity?
D. F_b = 12 − 9.0 = 3.0 N. SG = W_air/F_b = 12/3.0 = 4.0. The 1.3 value divides air weight by apparent weight. 3.0 is the buoyant force itself, and 0.75 inverts the ratio of apparent weight to air weight.
Q3Water and a liquid half as dense each leak from small holes 0.80 m below the open surface of identical tanks. The exit speeds are:
C. Torricelli's v = √(2gh) = √(2 × 9.8 × 0.80) = 4.0 m/s, independent of density. Density cancels in ½ρv² = ρgh. The heavier liquid has more pressure but also more inertia. 8.0 m/s would double the answer.
Q4A soap bubble has a radius of 1.0 cm and a film surface tension of 0.025 N/m. The excess pressure inside is about:
D. A soap bubble has two surfaces, so ΔP = 4γ/r = 4 × 0.025/0.010 = 10 Pa. 5 Pa uses 2γ/r, which fits a single surface. 2.5 Pa uses γ/r alone, and 1000 Pa misplaces the units.
Q5What is the pressure of 0.20 mol of ideal gas in 4.0 L at 27 °C?
C. T = 300 K. P = nRT/V = (0.20 × 0.0821 × 300)/4.0 = 1.23 atm. 0.12 atm drops a factor of ten and 12 atm adds one. Using 273 K instead of 300 K gives 1.1 atm.
Those are real questions from the pack, word for word.
