Five questions from the pack.
Q1Which species acts as a Lewis acid in AlCl3 + Cl- -> AlCl4-?
A. AlCl3 has an empty orbital on aluminum and accepts an electron pair from Cl-. Chloride is the donor (Lewis base). AlCl4- is the product. The Lewis definition does not require protons, so the last option is wrong.
Q2At pH 7.4, which phosphate species pair dominates (pKa2 = 7.20)?
A. pH is 0.2 above pKa2, so the ratio is 10^0.2 = 1.6 HPO4 2- per H2PO4-. H3PO4 is minor above pH 4. PO4 3- appears only near pKa3 (12.35), and both species are present, not just H2PO4-.
Q3A weak base B (0.10 M, pKb 4.75) is half-neutralized by HCl. The pH is:
A. At half-equivalence [B] = [BH+], so pH = pKa of BH+ = 14 - 4.75 = 9.25. The value 4.75 is the pKb (a pOH here), 7.00 is for a strong acid and strong base, and 5.28 is the pH at full equivalence.
Q4Ksp of PbI2 is 7.1 x 10^-9. Its molar solubility is closest to:
A. Ksp = 4s^3, so s = (7.1e-9/4)^(1/3) = 1.2e-3 M. 8.4e-5 uses s^2 (the AB formula), 7.1e-9 is the Ksp itself, and 1.8e-3 uses the wrong power.
Q5The osmotic pressure of 0.050 M CaCl2 at 300 K (R = 0.0821 L atm/mol K, i = 3) is closest to:
A. pi = iMRT = 3 x 0.050 x 0.0821 x 300 = 3.7 atm. 1.2 atm omits i, 0.12 atm uses the wrong power of ten, and 11 atm is three times too large.
Those are real questions from the pack, word for word.
