Sleep moves through four stages in a cycle: N1, N2, N3 (all non-REM) and REM. The MCAT mostly asks you to match a stage to its EEG wave or a behavior.
Stages and waves
| State | EEG pattern | Key features |
|---|---|---|
| Awake, alert | Beta (fast, low amplitude) | Active thinking |
| Awake, relaxed, eyes closed | Alpha | Drowsy calm |
| N1 | Theta | Light sleep, hypnagogic imagery, hypnic jerks |
| N2 | Theta with sleep spindles and K complexes | Largest share of the night, sleep spindles bursts |
| N3 | Delta (slow, high amplitude) | Slow-wave sleep, hardest to wake, sleepwalking and night terrors |
| REM | Fast, desynchronized, resembles waking | Vivid dreams, rapid eye movements, muscle atonia |
The cycle
A full cycle lasts about 90 minutes and repeats four to six times a night. Early cycles have more N3. Later cycles have longer REM periods, so cutting sleep short removes disproportionately more REM.
REM details
- Brain activity looks awake, but skeletal muscles are largely paralyzed, so it is sometimes called paradoxical sleep.
- Heart rate and breathing become irregular.
- Dreaming is most vivid, though dreams occur in other stages too.
Common traps
- Calling delta waves a feature of REM. Delta belongs to N3.
- Forgetting that REM EEG looks like waking.
- Placing sleep spindles in N3. They mark N2.
One-minute recap
- Awake: beta; relaxed: alpha.
- N1 theta, N2 spindles and K complexes, N3 delta.
- REM: fast EEG, atonia, vivid dreams, more at the end of the night.
Check yourself: 5-question mini-quiz
1. Which EEG wave defines N3 sleep?
Delta waves.
2. Which stage contains sleep spindles and K complexes?
N2.
3. Why is REM called paradoxical sleep?
The EEG resembles waking while skeletal muscles are paralyzed.
4. Which wave appears when awake and relaxed with eyes closed?
Alpha waves.
5. How does the share of REM change across the night?
REM periods get longer in later cycles.
